what’s a medical spa? a MedSpa? a medispa?

A MedSpa, Medical Spa, and a medispa are all the same thing. They each refer to the combination between a day spa and a medical clinic that operates under a Medical Director’s supervision (Usually a Non-Core Physician, a Plastic Surgeon, or a Dermatologist).

According to Ibis world, MedSpas typically operate under the full-time supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. They offer a range of services, such as Botox injections, laser hair removal, nutritionist services microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and teeth whitening. Of these, the top three services are Botox injections, aesthetician services and laser hair removal. Massage and bodywork treatments comprise more than half of day-spa and resort-spas business. They typically comprise less than a quarter of revenue for medical spas. For medical spas, medically supervised services generate one-third of all revenue. Still, these services’ revenue is negligible at other types of spas. In total, other services are expected to generate 8.1% of industry revenue.

The prices, like the specific offerings of medical spas, vary, but average industry pricing per treatment can be seen below.

Statista, 2020

According to the American Med Spa Association’s 2017 State of the Medical Spa Industry Report, 83% of medical spas say that they offer esthetician services vis-à-vis an aesthetician. And that makes good sense. These esthetician services are the second-highest revenue drivers at medical spas nationwide, the AmSpa survey found, outpaced only by filler injections (Radiesse) and neuromodulator injections (botulinum toxin type A). Just behind esthetician services, laser hair removal is the third highest revenue driver for medical spas.

For context, Aestheticians are licensed, skin-care professionals who generally apply skin care products and make-up, perform facials, administer light chemical peels, and light dermabrasion-type procedures. They are adept at making product recommendations to patients and are therefore intimately involved in skin-care dispensing in at many MedSpas. In some states, aestheticians can even administer certain IPL, laser hair removal, and microneedling treatments.
